Effect of Roux-en-Y Bariatric Bypass Surgery on Subclinical Atherosclerosis and Oxidative Stress Markers in Leukocytes of Obese Patients: A One-Year …

2020

Little is known about the mechanisms underlying the cardioprotective effect of Roux en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether weight loss associated with RYGB improves the oxidative status of leukocytes and ameliorates subclinical atherosclerotic markers. This is an interventional study of 57 obese subjects who underwent RYGB surgery. We determined biochemical parameters and qualitative analysis of cholesterol, leukocyte and systemic oxidative stress markers &mdash

Interference with purinergic signalling

2016

Objective: The association of abacavir (ABC), a guanosine analogue, with cardiovascular toxicity is a long-lasting matter of controversy engendered by the lack of a mechanism of action. Clinical data point to an acute mechanism of vascular inflammation. Previous studies have shown that ABC induces leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions, an indicator of vascular inflammation. These effects are reproduced by another purine analogue, didanosine, but not by pyrimidine or acyclic nucleotide analogues, hinting at an interference with the purinergic system. The aim of the present study was to assess the role of ATP-receptors in leukocyte accumulation induced by ABC. Design and methods: Clinical c…

Chemokine axes and inflammatory status in Metabolic Syndrome. Effect of PCSK9 inhibitors in the systemic inflammation associated to Familial Hypercho…

2019

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a metabolic disorder characterized by a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors and its prevalence remains increasing in Western world. It is associated to low-grade systemic inflammation, a key driver of premature atherosclerosis and the major cause of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Given that CXCL16/CXCR6, CX3CL1/CX3CR1 and CCL2/CCR2 axes have been implicated in the development of CVD, we investigated the role of these axes in leukocyte adhesion to the dysfunctional arterial endothelium in a MS model. We also performed a comprehensive analysis of different cellular and soluble immune players in patients with MS. When compared with the controls, MS patients present…
